First-Ever Hockey Tournament a Big Success

The first-ever ice hockey tournament in Plymouth City last weekend was a huge success with 5 teams from Plymouth competing in the Thunder Puck Cup at the Plymouth Pavilions. This was a great opportunity for Plymouth teams to play some competitive ice hockey against each other and also welcome in some new faces!

Thunder Puck Major Cup Winners – Plymouth Rock Stars

The Major Cup trophy saw 3 teams Plymouth Eclipse, Plymouth Phoenix and Plymouth Rock Stars compete in a 2 round robin competition with some very close matchups along the way. The top two teams, Phenix and Rock Stars, had to get through 2 previous matches to make the final where Rock Stars had found their rhythm and wasn’t going to let anyone knock them out of it, winning 3 – 1.

Thunder Puck Challenger Cup Winners – Plymouth Eclipse Blue Jackets

The games between entry level teams Eclipse Blue Jackets and Eclipse Black Jackets were closely contested but the Blue team under Adam Perona-Wright guidance won both games 2 – 1 & 2 – 0 and took the Challenger Cup trophy.

Special mention to both Hertin Cheng and Matthew Bunday who put in some terrific performances and were awarded the MVP on the night.

You can also add few words from me “I thought it went really well, it was a huge success and a win-win for everybody involved. We want to engage with the community, we want to continue to build the game of hockey. There is no question in our minds we’d like to come back and do it again, we might even try to expand it in the future with 2 or 3 tournaments a year.” Vadims Mahnovs BRIHA Management Committee

Why there is a need for Ice Hockey Tournament/League in Plymouth? The new Ice Hockey activity in the
Plymouth area will undoubtedly add new prospects plus offer responsible spare time activities for
recreation and exercise. Even the fact that Plymouth Pavilion Rink has a much smaller space
compared to a real rink size of 30 by 60 it’s still can be used for smaller competitions or tournaments. We
believe that 3 a side tournament can bring a lot of interest from existing users of Plymouth Pavilion
who currently train ice hockey on Wednesdays and Sundays, including Plymouth Phoenix Ice
Hockey team, Plymouth Eclipse Inline Hockey team and all the other teams that play Ice and Roller Hockey
in the South West BRIHA league.

BORN TO PLAY HOCKEY!!!
